Iraq Today / العراق اليوم

“Iraq Today” is a series of fragmented pictures of contemporary life around the country, aiming to give an unfamiliar perspective of Iraq, focusing on the intimate daily life of Iraqis aside from conflict, as Iraq is still recovering six years after the war against the Islamic State and experiencing today ripple effect from the Gaza War on its ground.

As foreign photographers choose to focus on war and crisis shaking the country these last decades, Lucas Barioulet focused on the intimacy of iraqi citizens, going on with their life amid the instability and change of the country. By photographing life coming back to place of massacre and battles, he intends to continue documenting the country, as the international attention is shifting to other countries in the region, following the fall of ISIS. Lucas Barioulet was regularly asked “Why would you photograph this ?” by Iraqi people, as their country has been one of the most documented in the world, but always through the same prism, shaping inside foreigners's minds a preconceived image of the country.
